Chart 1. Band 9 ANSWER KEY

Introduction (Identify what, where, when the data is about & the unit of measurement)

The data is shown as a table and a column bar chart, which compare (in percentages) sources of income for people who had retired and employment statistics in 2017 for the UK, Thailand and Japan.

Overview  (Describe what you can see GENERALLY in the data - The GENERAL TREND)

Overall, it can clearly be seen that while retirees from the UK relied mainly on public and private pensions, Japanese retirees counted on public pensions and money gained from continued work during retirement age. By contrast Thai citizens relied heavily on contributions from family members and less on pensions.

Paragraph 1  (Contrast 2 or 3 main features / use some complex sentences of contrast)

In more detail, although statistics for both the UK and Japan revealed that around half of all retired folk depended on a public pension (48% and 52% respectively), less than a fifth (17%) of Thai people received government (public) pensions in 2017. Notably, the level of public sector employment for all three countries was quite similar at just over a fifth for the UK, (21%) to approximately a quarter for Japan (26%) and Thailand (24%).

Paragraph 2  (Contrast 2 or 3 MORE main features / use some complex sentences of contrast)

Interestingly, private sector employment in all three countries was fairly high at just over half (51%) for Japan, and about three-fifths for the UK (56%) and Thailand, which had the highest private sector workforce of 62%. However, although nearly a quarter (23%) of UK retired people received a private pension, for Japan and Thailand it was much lower at 8% and 4% respectively.  8.5 band
