Map 1. Typed Answer Key. Below is the answer to Map 1. Chesham & Melbury. The maps can be found at the bottom of the page.

Intro – What, when, where and unit of measurement (population)

The information is shown as two maps of the semi-rural areas of Chesham and Melbury, which had populations of 2000 and 1000 people respectively in 1975, but which had increased four-fold by 2015 due to steady expansion and development of the two small English towns.

Overview: Summarise the changes from the earlier map to the later map.

Overall, it is clear by looking at the 2015 map that when Chesham and Melbury had merged into a much larger single town, the infrastructure had expanded from a network of minor roads to a more integrated road and rail system surrounded by additional recreation, industry and general amenities.

Body 1: Describe the key features in the earlier map.

In more detail, in the 1975 map while there was an established road network, this was mainly minor roads that connected Chesham in the north-west to Melbury situated to the south-east of the region. Chesham was comprised of a fairly large business area, a single school and a railway station that ran easterly to the area of Melbury. The latter town also had a school and a railway station. To the north east and the south-west there were some scattered farms.

Body 2: Describe the changes that had taken place.

However, 40 years later (2015), the area had been upgraded to major roads and an extra train station had been built. In addition, recreational facilities to the north-east and south-west in the form of a camping site and a golf course had replaced the old farms of 1975. Moreover, further schools had been built, as too had a new hospital, a 5-star hotel and significantly, a large industrial area to the south of what was now Chesham-Melbury had also been established.     20 mins / Band 9.
