Band 9 Model Answer - (18 minutes - timed writing demonstration video above)

Introduction – include what, where, when and the unit of measurement  (www.um)

The data is shown as two pie charts, which compare in percentages the sports most favoured by citizens in the two European countries of Spain and Switzerland in 2016.

Overview  - describe what you can see OVERALL in the data. The general trend.

Overall, it can clearly be seen that while football and swimming were the most popular sports in Spain, Swiss people preferred to go skiing the most. Also, Spanish people liked to play golf and volleyball, whereas the Swiss liked a game of hockey, which was not mentioned by Spanish respondents.

Paragraph 1.  Choose 2 points in the pie charts and describe in words and quote the data.

In more detail, by far the most popular sport in Switzerland was skiing, which represented just over a quarter of all Swiss respondents, whereas football was the most favoured sport in Spain accounting for almost two-fifths (38%) of all Spanish people. By contrast, only a fifth (20%) of Swiss people indicated that football was their most favoured sport. Notably, over a quarter (26%) of Spanish people expressed swimming as their favourite sport.

Paragraph 2.  Choose 2 points in the pie charts and describe in words and quote the data.

Interestingly, although tennis was popular with almost a tenth (9%) of Spaniards saying it was their most popular sport, it was more than twice as popular in Switzerland representing almost a fifth (19%) of respondents. Nevertheless, basketball was equally favoured by both Swiss and Spanish people at just under a tenth (9%) of all citizens expressing a liking for playing basketball.    Band 8.5.
